A Rangefinder will almost always take better pictures than an SLR (except in macro) assuming all other things being equal. In addition, there is no vibration from the mirror flipping up and down since there is no mirror.

On the other hand, certain other manufacturers such as Leica also offer excellent lenses that rival or beat the Contax G series lenses, albeit not to any significant degree.Ī: Rangefinders have lenses that are mounted much closer to the focal plane (film), this allows for much sharper images than SLR type cameras. You will not find any 35mm lens from any manufacturer that is better in any significant manner. Q: I have heard that the lenses for the Contax G1 are better than, is that true?Ī: The G series lenses are among the best in the world. Many came with a certificate to allow you to send your camera in and have it upgraded for free. The original silver versions could be “upgraded” to green labels by sending the unit into Contax. Q: I see some cameras listed as “green” stickers or labels, what is this?Ī: The original G1 could not use the 21mm and 35mm lenses, a correction was made and cameras that could handle these lenses had a green label instead of the older silver label inside the camera where you drop in the film. You also had the choice of Auto, Aperture priority.

A SLR is a much better choice for macro photography. It was a rangefinder camera, but it offered the choice of manual focusing or autofocus. Q: Can I shoot macro shots with the Contax G1?Ī: I suppose you could try, but rangefinders are not designed for this, and you will not find any macro lenses. Keep in mind that anything outside of 28-90mm the viewfinder will not show a correct image for, and AF does not work at all with these lenses. Also, there is no programming for this lens.Ī: Yes, you can use Contax SLR lenses with the GA-1 lens adapter.

Converters are available to use them on digital cameras (it seems Metabones make the best and certainly the most expensive ones) but a few shooters I know who've used them say results are so-so, the 45 and 90 produce okay images but the 28 and 35 tend to flare and throw up odd artifacts. These G lenses are now living legends all their own. My question for the forum is this: Is the Contax G2, along with its supposedly sensational Zeiss glass, enough of an improvement over the Canon? Will pictures taken with a Zeiss lens look that much different from pictures taken with my 40mm f/2.8 Canon lens? I realize that the answers to these questions are probably very subjective, but I am interested in hearing what the forum members have to say about this.Ĭlick to expand.Which is why I own four of these babies. I am okay with that since I love how it looks and the fact that it's supposed to be able to take good pictures. I am aware that the camera contains electronic parts that may not be repairable if it breaks, and that some find the viewfinder to be rather small. I am very close to convincing myself that I must have this camera, even though it costs upwards of two thousand dollars with one or two lenses. However, the Canon does not spark that much of a joy when using it, even though it gets the job done.įor the last few weeks, I have been drooling over the Contax G2 on eBay. I enjoy using them both but I use the Canon more, since I like autofocus, along with a Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM lens. Believe it or not, you already own a great resource that covers every. I have two 35mm cameras that I use regularly: Minolta XD-11 and Canon EOS Elan 7N. which I forwarded to Sony: full-frame, digital Contax G2, Minolta CLE.
